What a VoIP PBX actually is
VoIP stands for Voice over IP: voice over the internet protocol. A VoIP PBX is the system that handles your company’s calls by converting your voice into data packets and sending them over the network, instead of over the copper pair of a traditional phone line.
Put simply: it’s the same PBX as always — extensions, transfers, greetings, queues — but running over your internet connection instead of over a metal box hanging on the wall of the utility room.
The practical difference isn’t technological, it’s about flexibility. Adding an extension on an analog PBX meant running cable. On VoIP it’s a two-minute configuration change.

That’s why it matters to prioritize voice traffic on the router (QoS), not buy more megabits. There are three ways to talk on a VoIP PBX, and they can be mixed within the same company: If you have analog phones that work fine, an ATA adapter keeps them in service.
